Being A Mother

A mother holds her children's hands for a while, their hearts forever.
                                                              -Author Unknown

I think of these words from time to time. I did this week as my son who lives in Oakland, California, was home for a visit. Parenthood is such a great blessing, but it comes with challenges and heartaches as well as precious and incomparable joys.
Our stops on Wednesday included Midsouth Marketplace Antiques and Collectibles, Dunkin' Donuts, Plantation Antiques, Goodwill, and
Tops Bar-B-Q.

It was wonderful to spend time with Ryan. We talked and shared thoughts and feelings, and I couldn't help but cry some, too. Love my son!

Autumn Mantel

Once more I'm trying to decorate the mantel in our den. Hiding vents is the neverending decorating problem. I shouldn't even complain about them when there are people whose homes have been damaged or lost from recent storms.

In a weird kind of way the placemats are working as covers.

Sweet September

Such a lovely month for getting out, exploring, and browsing.

I found a piece of green pottery at Denise's Antiques near Munford.

Two interesting pieces of furniture at Millington's Marketplace.

I brought home this piece of McCoy pottery and used it to display a few old black and white photos.

A cloche is one of my favorite ways to show off objects.

The mood to paint came over me, and I started another flower painting.

It's coming along.

Last September on this date the wedding of Lauren and Justin took place.  How fast a year passes once you get older!

Thoughts

Feeling very thankful as I watch the reports on the devastation in other parts of our country...so much is happening to our land...is God speaking to us through these events? Have we pushed Him aside for too long? Is our great nation on the way to a fall? These are thoughts to ponder. These are matters for prayer.

My love of crocks goes way back.
Most of mine are dark brown.
These two are at the end of the hearth.

I am filling this dough bowl with fall elements for the dining table.

This wood piece was probably an old sewing machine drawer.

This magazine rack was made by my dad. Carpentry was one of his many talents. For years my maternal grandmother kept it by her easy chair. Maybe Dad made it especially for her. I remember her phone stayed on the top, and newspapers and farm journals were jammed on the shelves. I have thought about painting it, but cannot bring myself to change it. The rack now holds decorating books and magazines and sits on the hearth near my easy chair.

One of my favorite pictures of my parents shows them picking berries on the side of a road. I view it every day and miss them more and more. I also miss the the world as I knew it back then. You were not afraid of strangers. You trusted and respected the people in your community.  You easily believed in the goodness of others.

Tying Up Loose Ends

Sometime ago I started this canvas, and the bottom picture shows how I left it.
Nothing grand, but I like its peaceful feeling.

*******
Nicolas turned ten in August. I liked his invitation.
Hopefully his interest in art will continue.

*******
The annual Labor Day barbecue was enjoyed by family and friends.
Many said this year's barbecue was the best.

*******
Corkey turned 73 the first of September.
He is one special guy!

When Aunt Geneva and Uncle Jim selected light fixtures for this house, I'm so glad they chose this one with leaves and acorn for the entry.
It says welcome to this season in particular.

Changing Seasons

September is here, and changes are in the air. I love this time of the year for the cooler temperatures, the colors, and the activities. Even inside rooms get some early fall decorating.
