Back to the Shops

Sometimes you are unable to get something off your mind. That's the way I was about the mirror I spotted in January. My friend Linda and I had a shopping day so guess where I headed my car. The mirror was still there, but it did not have quite the same power over me. I believe this second trip to check it out will put my mind at rest. A clock I had admired on my previous visit had a sale sticker on it. This older steeple clock had been converted to a battery-operated one. Reduced from thirty dollars to eighteen. I was thrilled to get it home, find a place for it on the hutch, see it keeping perfect time with the pendulum swinging, and have my husband like it.

Besides the clock I brought home a small cloth box and a pewter-looking compote.

Picture it with a white doily and red Valentine candies.

Browsing and treasure hunting...the best sort of therapy.

Popping In

It was a wonderful weekend. On Saturday friends took us to their son's home in Haywood County. We had a home tour of a two-story historical home built in 1825. Oh, it was simply amazing! Authentic antiques, artifacts, collections...a feast for the eyes! I wanted to snap pictures, but since it was a private home and my first time there, I didn't have the nerve to ask. You'll have to trust me on this.

It was one of the most beautiful houses I've ever seen. The couple had lovingly and correctly restored parts of the house and searched for unique pieces to complement the different rooms. Dinner out at a fine restaurant was the perfect ending to the evening. Sunday was church and later an unforgettable Super Bowl game.

Today I carried items to the booth and happily discovered that five things had sold over the weekend. I also spent time with my mom. She continues to know me, and that is such a blessing.

Tag Time

I seem to concentrate on birds when the notion to make tags hits me. I repeat some themes but try to add a few that are new.

I have been working at the booth. You never know what someone is looking to buy. While I was adding and rearranging items, one lady told me my booth was the only reason she ventured upstairs. Now that made me feel good!

Visiting my mom is another part of my schedule. Yesterday was a good day.

She was content looking through her Christmas cards. Conversation doesn't flow between us like it used to, and sometimes she makes strange comments. But I'm so thankful I can still wrap my arms around her and feel her squeeze me back.

Smalls Have Significance

Sometimes I like to share tidbits about what is in each picture. Starting at the top:

These little books once belonged to my paternal grandmother who lived in Sellersburg, Indiana.
This little scoop was purchased in the 70's at Depot Antiques in Obion, Tennessee. This shop had a room in the back that featured kitchen items. Lots of tiny scoops were hanging in a wall display, and I had to have the two I picked.
This cup and saucer set was part of my mother's collection. The rust and brown colors make it a favorite in my collection.
The green bowl was a gift from my sister-in-law. For a long time it held tiny pinecones.
The JOY key ornament was found at Christmastime. I bought a supply of them and enjoyed giving them away. Recently I read that the J is for Jesus who should be first, the O is for Others who are second, and the Y is for Yourself...last.
The rock with the cross was given out at church a few weeks ago. Our pastor had one for everyone in the congregation. He asked us to come forward. After dipping the stone in water and placing it in our cupped hands, he said, "Remember your baptism."

My Kind of Day

Such fun to connect with an old friend for shopping, eating out, and of course, discussing kids and grandkids and remembering people and episodes from our past. This time we tried out a new eating spot and discovered an old bank building that's now an upscale resale store. This was a unique shopping experience because of the many offices that now house consignment treasures. There were quality pieces throughout the spacious display areas. I was drawn to the clocks, wall art, fine rugs, and furniture. There was even an elevator ride to take you to the second floor that was full of more temptations. Here's something I hated to leave behind. This mirror has the leaves and acorns motif that I like so much.

Looking forward to our next meeting on the square...maybe the mirror will still be there...

From Paintings to Playgrounds

Yesterday I had a tough time deciding what to do about a Goodwill find. There was a painting that I liked but didn't love. Six dollars was so reasonable for this piece of art. I will live with it for awhile...may decide later to take it to the antique store.

Today I finished a set of tags for a young girl named Kaitlyn. Last month I mailed a set to Ericka. Making tags is still one of my favorite things to do.

I remember when I first started teaching that jumping rope was a favorite activity at recess. Sometimes I would even jump with them. Of course, I was in my twenties back then. Sweet memories of a different time when dodge ball, kickball, jungle gym climbing, and jumping rope to rhymes were popular.

The coffeemaker, storage unit, and all sorts of coffees was a Christmas gift from the kids. It's wonderful!

There's reading, organizing, cleaning, exercising...visits with Mom, booth to rework, bargain hunting, blog time, etc. I'm just glad I feel well enough to tackle it all. Hope you're rested and well and finding that precious extra time to do what you love. I'm searching for more of that extra time so I can dabble with paints in the studio.

One of the sweetest memories was when four-year- old Nicolas neatly folded his new outfits back into the box. When he tucked the shirt under his chin and folded the sleeves perfectly back in place, all eyes were on him in disbelief.

Lester was kind enough to share his pictures with me. This is one of my favorites. Everyone crowded into the livingroom to watch the kids open packages.

A Tennessee Writer

Yes, my friend Carla is an author. As she dealt with the tragic loss of her husband Muril, she turned to writing and kept a grief journal. Tears, Fears, and Hanging by a Prayer is her account of events and people during this transition period.

Today in Jackson, Tennessee, there was a book signing event for several Tennessee writers. It was held in an old library building. In fact, years ago we came here as college students to read and do research.

Carla and I have shared a long friendship. To know her is to love her.

She is caring, wise, and funny. She writes in the same way. This book is sure to be an inspiration to others.

Due to school closings two grandsons spent the day with us.

It was a good day to get Christmas cards ready for mailing.

This grouping of houses is on the hutch in the hall.

Last year the "Believe" sign was on the kitchen window sill.

This year I draped it on top of the hall mirror.

This little crown was my latest bargain buy.

It had all its jewels and was only thirty cents.

My Charlie Brown tree with Christmas words ended up in the spare bedroom where the grandsons sometimes play and sleep. The green Jingle is a new word in this collection of terms.

Getting Started

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone I am starting to decorate for Christmas. Most of my decorating will be trying to use what I already have in a somewhat different way.

I used the little cupboard to cover the hideous vent on one side of the mantel.

A stack of books and the framed alphabet page hide the vent on the other side.

I love mantels and fireplaces...just not this one. However, I've learned to like it over the years 'cause it's the only one I'm ever going to have in our den in this older home...and besides I really am thankful to have a home, mantel, and holiday decorations. So I should

Busy Week

My mom had her 89th birthday on Monday.

Flowers, boxes of candy, cards, photo album, red blouse, black pants, two long distance phone calls, and hugs helped make it a special day for her.

I made it by the booth on Tuesday to check on sales. Folks may be waiting until next month for Christmas Open House discounts.

Today it was time to prepare for tomorrow's Thanksgiving meal. Tonight I took a few pictures of the dining table...actually two identical tables that we bought to accomodate our large family.

There will be plenty of food...we usually line all the selections on the kitchen counters and stovetop. Plates are filled, and appetites are satisfied.

We are thankful to be together but miss those who are far away.

Holding Back

In our guest bedroom I put out my first little bit of Christmas. I am trying to hold off on Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. My little collection of trees won't really be noticed in the extra room. I wanted to see if I liked this grouping of very different tree styles.

Undecided about which ones to group together...will probably keep experimenting. When I start the real job of unpacking decorations after Thanksgiving, it will be a chore I love but also dislike. I'm always so impatient to get everything decorated.

In the Middle

Here it is the middle of the week, and I feel the need to write a few words. I've been busy being lazy. There was a lot of rain yesterday so I stayed inside and kept my head in a book.

Today I ventured out to see my mother, to mail ministry cards, and to buy a few more items for shoebox gifts.

Tonight at church we packed lots of shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Can't help but wonder what little boy and girl

will open my boxes of toys and surprises.

NOTEWORTHY

Later tonight I plan to record something in my journal. I want that date in my journal...not that I did anything outstanding on this day. But I did remember our veterans and their sacrifices...so grateful to them and thankful to be living in America.

I moved my journals from the writing desk because some of the journals were too tall to stand upright on those shelves. I lined them up in order on a bookcase shelf in the entry hall. Now they are much easier to reach. Sometimes I wish they were in the same style and color, but then again I wouldn't trade those that were gifts from either students, friends, or my own children.

I have a few that had to go on the next shelf. It was hard to reduce my books down in order to make room for the journals, but it was time to let certain titles go. Now it's time for me to write a journal entry about my ordinary, extra pleasant day.

Tuesday Tidbits

The interest thus far in my giveaway has been small, but my excitement is BIG after getting the box of goodies ready for shipment. I wrapped each item this morning for a snug fit. There's still time if anyone wants to comment on My 500th Post. A name will be drawn on Saturday morning.

I stopped by the booth and snapped a few photos to share.

From the booth I went and checked on my mother. She always looks so nice on Tuesdays because that's the day her hair is washed and styled. A sweetheart of a lady named Mona does hair appointments at the care center, and she does a terrific job week after week.

My next stops were at two shops that had Christmas Open House last weekend. I wanted to see their Christmas trees and other decorations. It was not disappointing. To my delight there were those acorn ornaments that I searched for last year and couldn't find. I may have missed out on refreshments last weekend, but today's shopping was calm and peaceful.

On the drive home the trees were something to behold. Brillant reds, golds, and yellows were everywhere. Rust and burgundy, too.

There is always something to make you wonder in the shape of a tree, the trembling of a leaf.

I am almost to my 500th post. Therefore, I'm planning my second giveaway. Thus far I've gathered

a glass jar that holds clothespins...a few are decorated. The paper rose is made from a coffee filter and crafted by my friend Mary. I've attached a holiday key ornament with the word JOY.

The bird has autumn colors for November and a place to burn a candle.

There's a 2012 Susan Branch Heart of the Home calendar, rubber stamps, and a supply of tags.

Hanging Out in the Kitchen

This fake pumpkin is keeping its place of honor on the cake stand.

Some tags I stuffed inside a pitcher.

Recent Goodwill find(fifty-nine cents!!!) in my Pfaltzgraff pattern holds packets of sweeteners.

Churn sits on top of refrigerator with other items.

I like the word HOME and the place itself.

Just the other day I came across this egg basket at Marketplace for four dollars.

I may have mentioned this before...the rolling pin was made by my dad.

A vintage bowl acts as a pedestal for another sweet pitcher.

As you know by now I am always switching objects around to different spots or working in something I just bought. Thanks for hanging out in the kitchen with me.

The Tradition Continues

My fingers on my right hand are very tired after using a tiny saw to carve this
year's jack-o'-lantern. Cutting the tiny parts to the spooky house and tree was not easy due to the thickness of the pumpkin. But once the candle was lit to see the result, I was happy.

I rubbed some petroleum jelly around the cut edges as recommended to keep the carved pumpkin looking fresh longer.

Plain to Glamorous

I have a notebook where I keep seasonal ideas and pictures from magazines.
Thus the notebook is divided into four sections for the four seasons. One of the easiest and best suggestions came from an article "Crafts for your Party."

Take a plastic orange pumpkin.

Paint it with a gold metallic washable acrylic.

Ready to fill with candy or use as a decoration.

I have selected the design for this year's jack-0'-lantern. Sure hope it turns out. Before I go a few outdoor pictures here at home.

Decorating for Halloween

After seeing Mamie Jane's(http://mamiejanes.blogspot.com) recent post about the look you get from removing book covers, I decided to try it. I used a few old college books and saved their covers for future projects. I really was pleased with the worn look.

I think I now have an addiction to inexpensive forgotten treasures. These finds usually turn up at antique malls, thrift stores, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and yard sales.

The little standing lamb was too sweet to leave behind. With three lambs I have the start of a collection. Actually I think I have a few more packed away with Christmas boxes.

This dark wood plate I debated about in my mind, but the quote by Helen Keller was the deciding factor. Also liked the tree and bench in the scene.

The horse clock continues to run, and I am getting used to it on the wall.

These two prints I have had since the 1970's. I never tire of the storefront or the bookstore.

I am reading a good book that I don't want to end. It's a story of enduring friendship.

I have another Kristin Hannah book to read after this one. I'm also pouring over the pages inside this Country Living decorating book.

Autumn days are meant to be enjoyed so let's you and I remember to take the time to savor the sights, smells, and activities of fall.

One of my favorite places to browse is the Goodwill store in my area. I stroll along the home decor aisles in search of tiny treasures.

I found these small objects and decided to put them together on a desk in the guest bedroom.

I want to add more pens and pencils to the jar, but they will cost more than the two dollars I spent on three object arrangement.

I admired this bird ornament, especially the five words.

My sweet daughter-in-law secretly bought it for me.

Thanks, Pennee, for surprising me by slipping the ornament into my store bag once we were back at the apartment.

This was the California shop that delighted Pennee and me with its array of decorative pieces. Paperweights, magnets, bookmarks, plaques, statues, and ornaments by Kelly Rae Roberts grabbed our attention.

I chose this hanging butterfly for its colors and important word on the wing.

The phrases on this plaque drew me to this artistic piece.

She now resides in my studio and so does the butterfly on the chain.

Enjoyable Day

Early in the day I finished a tag set for a young friend whose birthday is Thursday. I had to stop at Walgreen's for a mailing envelope before

meeting Mary at the booth to change up some of our displays. Our booth is small, but we try to squeeze in as much as we can. We also can't resist looking at other booths. I was amazed at one low price tag...only five dollars... for something quite unique. I'll show you my purchase in a future post.

In the afternoon I visited my mother at the nursing home. We listened to musical numbers that were gospel, pop, and a little bit rock and roll. Singing along to the old favorites made everyone smile.

Finding Joy in Little Things

This little jar was my one dollar find last week.

I made a new batch of hand lotion. I put it in this container for easy access...no having to unscrew a top to get to the creamy mixture.

Even on sale I probably paid too much for this child's miniature cupboard. Condition was damaged and very dirty. I have been cleaning on it but may have to touch up parts of it with paint.

A little cup and saucer help hide the tear in the back.

I picked up this JOY stand at a yard sale. Not sure I like the black color...may change that.

The greatest joy this weekend was having son Ryan home for a visit. Three years ago he moved to California, and the separation has been hard .

Summer's End

With the cooler weather a few potted plants are putting on a final display of pretty blooms. But I've seen mums and pumpkins in different locations. Yesterday I was where a court square was decorated with hay bales and pumpkins, but I was too lazy to get my camera from its protective case and snap a few photos. I even stopped at a new antique shop just off the square. I must have been in a weird mood not to take pictures. Anyway I'm ready for crisp air, gold and rusty red leaves, fall harvest displays, and jeans and jacket attire.

Over the weekend I pulled out my journal from 2001 and read what I had written on September 11th. That day in the classroom came back like it was yesterday.

Here is that entry:

During the first hour of school Mrs. Newbill came over the intercom to tell us to stay inside the building for our recess periods. She mentioned pollution levels, asthma and breathing difficulties to explain her cancellation of outdoor playtime. At the time I did not know what had happened in America. It was not until 10:10 that I heard the awful news. I had dropped my students off at the library and stopped by the office to pick up Abacus tests.

I returned to my classroom and turned on the radio. Chilling reports about the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

Throughout the day I followed our schedule, the students unaware. Three girls were picked up by parents. The other students wondered why, but it was not revealed to them.

Once I was home television footage and reporting filled in the tragic events. AMERICA UNDER ATTACK was the headline on every main channel.

Yesterday I watched much of the moving memorial coverage on television and was inspired by all those courageous families who lost loved ones on that fateful day. It caused me to be (and continues to make me) more appreciative of every person, activity, and moment.

My daughter and I were able to share this past Sunday afternoon by enjoying another tour of homes in Central Gardens.

This house was the biggest and best.

There were six homes open to the public...each one full of character and style.

I came home to my own place, trying my best not to be jealous of all that I had seen.... archways, designer kitchens, handsome furniture, gorgeous rugs, artwork, etc. Truthfully it was wonderful to visit, but I was happy to be back at my own address.

Displaying Frenzy

Whether at home or at the booth it's nice to make changes. First I'll take you to the booth since Mary brought in some new items. I love her finds, and she likes my things. We could actually shop in our own booth and be excited.

I've been moving some objects around here at home, too... will probably take me many tries before I come up with something I like.

We had to have our Sunday evening fish fry in the barn due to rain. Today's Labor Day meal for family and friends was at the Community Center. This two-day celebration has been a tradition for many, many years.

I found this metal object at Goodwill...thinking I would offer it at the booth.
But the three-legged stand with all the swirls looked right at home in my

craft corner.

Walmart had lots of new stuff on its scrapbooking aisle. There were bins full of stamps...all marked one dollar.

I was so proud of my bargain finds, but then I splurged on magazines!

Oh well, I'm sure you understand when it comes to these two. How I love vintage decorating!

Somebody has this jar of clothespins. It makes me happy when I take an item to the booth, and it sells immediately. I hope this individual enjoys the decorated ones as well as the plain ones.

Happy Is Such a Nice Feeling

Our weekend was lovely due to cooler weather and gentle breezes. Felt guilty enjoying our fine weather while the East Coast was suffering because of Hurricane Irene. Nevertheless one little boy had a wonderful outdoor birthday party on Saturday.

I wanted to share a card from my friend Pat. She makes the prettiest cards.
This one was too pretty to tuck away so I placed it on my bedside table.

My four day get-away with college friends was just as I hoped...fun, relaxing, and memorable. Historical buildings, quaint shops, antique malls, great restaurants, and friendly people made our stay in Bardstown, Kentucky, extra special. We fell in love with the town.

Remembering...

When I view this doorway I remember how my mother would step out and walk to the swing and spend long stretches of time sitting and reading. She is confined to a wheelchair and no longer takes an interest in reading. Her life at the nursing care facility is a small world indeed. I cherish my visits with her because one day I may not be able to call on her there. Today I mentioned I would be away for a few days due to a short trip with college friends. She told me to have a good time and that she would be okay. My prayer is that she will be okay and that our trip will be safe, relaxing, and memorable. With a heavy heart I know my mother's memories are shrinking. I am blessed she continues to know me. To lose your precious memories to Alzheimer's would be devastating. However, a soft-spoken female doctor at our last trip to the emergency room spoke kindly to me and said, "You are suffering because you remember how your mother used to be, but she is not suffering. She is content in her world."

Friday in the Store

I was going to stop by the booth for a few minutes, but it turned out to be much longer. Plenty of customers were milling about upstairs. One lovely young shopper told me the booth was one of her favorites and that she checks it out regularly. Now that made my day! There's just one problem I have when I stop by the store. I find cool stuff I like in other booths. Today I bought two spur-of- the-moment small items, and I am so happy with 'em. I'll snap their pictures soon and share... one that's cute, one that's useful.

In The Kitchen

While waiting for brownies to bake I puttered around in the kitchen and came up with this little arrangement. Cheese boxes made the mini shelves for the butterpats and egg cups.

A Monday Memory

As my friends and I discovered Monday is not always the best day to go antiquing. Some stores around the town square were closed, but we hit the open ones and a couple out on the main highway. The Past Times Antiques building was once the drugstore on the corner.

Mary, Nancy, and I liked the shape and handle of this painted wooden container.

This candle holder made from a spoon and thimble was worth a second look.

This sign is a new item in our store booth.

I can imagine this wagon filled with pumpkins in the fall.

Buttons decorate this recipe on an oatmeal box lid. The white button says "Idle Time."

Our summer get-together went by too quickly. Thank goodness for emails and facebook since Nancy lives in Florida. Mary and I may live in different states, but we're only about an hour's drive apart.

Well, August is here, and it is HOT! The sweltering heat really makes me appreciate air-conditioning and a glass of ice cold water.

Mary and I worked on our booth space today. We had fun trying to squeeze in lots of good junk. But this post is about the neat stuff Mary gave me.

This tin had just what I needed to finish a project.

This gorgeous butterfly was another item from Mary.

She also brought me a set of six magnets with vintage designs. These are two of my favorites.

Mary is generous, fun-loving, creative, and loyal. She's the real deal...a true friend.

It's crazy how fast the weeks go by. I know I must sound like a broken record, for I'm always commenting about the quick passage of time. Today I'm posting a few pictures here at home to let you know I'm still around. This first one shows a $1 find at Goodwill. I couldn't pass up this sweet little bird perched on a leaf dish that now holds loose change.

There's my favorite number on top of the green thingy. The significance of the seven has to do with two parents, four boys, and one girl.

A friend is what the heart needs all the time.

Searching and Finding

I can be happily satisfied by the smallest accomplishments.

Case in point: My friend Mary had this wooden thing(candle base, pedestal, or whatever it was) that she planned to add to the booth. But I desired it for its wooden shape and green color and scooped it up for her asking price. Since then I have been trying to decide what to display on top. Well, at Charlene's...a shopper's paradise...there was a bowl of decorative billiard balls.

Also at this fabulous store was this wire hanger. I am experimenting to see what I want to display on it.

My final find of the day was at a place I had never stopped at before. Very different from Charlene's... picture a lot of clutter and messy. But one dollar I gladly paid for this decorative green ball.

The thrill of the hunt keeps me happy. Don't you feel the same?

Days scoot by, and then I realize I meant to post something for my friends and readers. Well, here's some of what has been happening. We had a special Saturday due to Lucas' christening immediately following the wedding of Olga's sister who is the godmother. Little Lucas behaved beautifully. This surprised us because usually he is such a wiggleworm.

Studio Time

A new rubber stamp was the stimulus to get me in the studio room. I happened upon it at Big Lots for $2. It is the bird in the photo at the end of the post. I finally got around to trying out the Kiwi shoe polish suggestion by Vicki at Rusty Rooster Vintage. Great tip!

Another week has flown by, and I am trying to process the fact that half of 2011 has already passed. The holiday weekend was pleasant but quickly over. On Monday the Fourth we sat down to enjoy ribs and chicken from the grill, potato salad, baked beans, and butter crunch chocolate pie. My mom gave me the pie recipe years ago. It's the crust that makes it special.

Butter Crunch Chocolate Pie

1/2 cup butter

1 cup Gold Metal flour

1/4 brown sugar(packed)

1/2 cup nuts(pecans)

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix all ingredients with hands. Spread in oblong pan and bake for 15 minutes. Stir occasionally until light brown.

Press hot Butter Crunch in pie pan and shape shell. Pour hot chocolate filling(Jell-o Cook and Serve 50z box) into shell. Let filling cool and set.

Now on to the real reason for this post. I'm sharing five simple solutions that work for me. You may decide "It's a good thing" as Martha Stewart would say and use one of these simple hints.

I think my favorite is the last one. This tip was shared in a Simple Life magazine. I keep one box on the top shelf of the bathroom closet. When I need to empty the wastecan, I reach for a bag. My other box stays in the utility room closet near the kitchen. This ingenious system keeps many grocery store bags under control.

An Afternoon at the Booth

My friend Mary and I worked on the upstairs booth by adding two shelf units to our small space and by changing displays. It was so much fun to see what new items she had found or made.

I can't speak for Mary, but I know I am tired tonight from all that we did. I'll probably dream of booth #89 and how we can cram more "treasures" into 5.5 x 10.

Tuesday my husband and I hit the road and headed to Savannah, Tennessee, to see our friend Carla. We three talked most of the time but also enjoyed stops at a flea market, restaurant, and bookstore.

Below is the only trinket I bought at the flea market. The bird paperweight was only two dollars so how could I resist.

We talked a lot about Muril and the good times we once shared. We visited his gravesite... missing his presence but feeling it, too.

On Monday I bought a little something at Tuesday Morning for our 22nd anniversary that is today. I thought it was different, and at our ages the sentiment was appropriate. We realize that the years are passing faster than we want them to and that we must cherish whatever time we have. On the tag that came with the gift item was this message about the product.

Lost and Found is a collection that brings back to life a time of simpler traditions and inspired moments in our history. Composed from old vintage "finds" and creatively assembled into inspirations for the home, Lost and Found captures the feeling of heritage, sentiments and traditions into our everyday living. It is a reminder in our daily lives to embrace our history and retell our stories. What may have been lost in time, is now found and relived in inspiration, shaping our future and reminding us of the core values and traditions that are the foundation of our lives.

On our bedroom dresser there is some of our family's history...from our parents' long ago portraits to the more recent decorative keepsake ball from Pennee and Lester's oudoor wedding. To this mix I added the sentiment stand.

May it remind us to enjoy and love growing old together.
